Things that Make Me Laugh

Things that Make Me Laugh

I once heard a story about a neurosurgeon in a remote part of Alaska who wears a helmet every time he drives his car because he’s the only neurosurgeon around. I have no idea if this is true and can’t remember where I heard it, but I have been laughing about that for at least two decades. I don’t know why it tickles me so much. I guess it just charms me. There’s something so innocent and true and sensible about it. And quirky. He values his safety and health more than he worries about looking foolish. I love that. I think he’s someone I’d like to know.

I just love to laugh! Sometimes with no warning I will recall one of my favorite gems and just laugh right out loud. My girls like to guess what I’m laughing about. They know all my go-tos.

Out of the Mouths of Babes

Once, around my daughter’s third birthday, we were in a large public restroom. I was hovering (well, yeah! Eww!) and she was kind of behind me and to the left because she was in the obsessed-about-flushing-public-toilets phase, poised and ready. I’m assuming all kids go through that. Both of ours did. Anyway, out of the blue she says, in that real loud outdoor-voice way, “Mommy your bottom is huge.” It wasn’t just loud. It was the kind of voice you use when you are telling your best friend a scandalous morsel. That “you are NOT going to believe this” voice. My first reaction was laughter. I laughed and laughed and through the laughter I thought, “Wait!” I needed to teach her that observations about the bodies of others are better left unspoken but that in this case I know she meant nothing hurtful. She was just speaking the truth. So I said, “You’re right! It’s my largest feature. But…” and laid out the responsible adult lesson. And then I said, “One more thing. When I was your age, my bottom looked just like yours.” Well, that was around a decade ago, and I still get to laughing about that.

My Favorite Ad

This one’s minor, but for some reason I can hardly get through it if I’m talking about it. It’s hard to talk when you’re laughing. I was searching Craigslist for a big dresser. I clicked one I liked and the text read something like, “Large dresser in great condition. It doesn’t have any scratches or dongs or anything.” I don’t know what I’d give to have a screen shot of it. The seller meant dings, obviously. I understand if you don’t share my mirth on that one. My family rolls their eyes, so you aren’t alone.

Our Funny Dog

Our dog, Flossie, is also a constant source of laughter. She is a golden doodle with blond frizzy hair and is so good natured.  All I have to do is look at that Alfalfa tuft of hair on the top of her head in combination with her earnest, hopeful facial expression and it makes me laugh. One time I was sitting at the kitchen table, and when I looked up, this is what I saw:

This was back in the days when craft supply detritus was commonplace on our kitchen floor. Gold star, Flossie!

Things Kids Do

This gem is Bailey at age 2. She has always loved makeup. She came up to me and said, “Look Mommy, my eyebrows are a giant!” It happened twice.

I can hardly stand how cute she is! She’s now skillfully applying her own stage makeup. Sigh.

I’m a fan of stand-up comedy. One of my favorite physical comedians is TJ Miller. You may have seen him on Silicon Valley. That character barely scratches the surface of his genius. {Here} is a better example of what I mean. {Here} is part two. Watch them both. If you are in public you may want to wait. I can’t watch them without ugly laughing.

Our family goes to family camp every summer and the drive is 6 long hours. 2 years ago, we listened to Brian Regan, my favorite clean comic, on the drive. We now have Brian Regan-related inside jokes we all love.  {Here} is one of my favorite bits. If you are in a hurry, start at second 56.

Jim Gaffigan is another  but silly (one of my favorite combinations) comic. {Here} is a sample of one of his bits. If you are in a hurry, start with second 58.

One of my all time favorites is {this Saturday Night Live skit} (for speed watching, go from second 50 to 2:28). Oh, it almost hurts. Will Ferrell’s shirt. And his hips. Oh, I can’t stand it!

And here are a few self explanatory memes that seriously tickle my funny bone:

I hope you got a few laughs! These little joys really add to the texture and fullness of life.

What gets you laughing?

The Will Ferrell Cow Bell skit is one of his finest!!!! However, one of my favorite characters of his is that of a cheerleader with Sherry O’Terry. Talk about ugly laughing…….
Also anything with Melissa McCarthy makes me laugh out loud so ferociously that my entire core is sore the next day!

  • […] It’s so fun to watch as they discover things about their bodies. One night at dinner, 4 year old Delaney, usually very animated, said in a flat tone “I can make two of stuff if I go like this with my eyes.” She then slowly crossed her eyes. I wish I’d snapped a photo of the eye-cross. The focus! Bailey informed us one day at around age 2, “I have a new nose pose,” and then proceeded to pinch her nostrils together and breathe in to make her nostrils collapse. Nose pose. You can’t make up this stuff! Later, Bailey hit her fingers hard on the edge of a cabinet or something. I said, “Aww. Did you hurt your fingers?” She said, “The knees of my fingers.” I said, “Oh, your knuckles?” She answered, “Yeah, my nickels.” And then, of course, there is the “Mommy your bottom is huge” incident that you can read about {here}. • Okay, I laughed at the dongs part, too. I’m glad there are others that share my same sense of humor! HA!

  • I left pretty darn hard parts of this. The store when your dogs nose just cracked me up. That something that would’ve going on in my house my dogs always and everything that we are doing. And for real, I’d love to meet that neurosurgeon that wears a helmet just because he’s the only neurosurgeon around. He and I have minds that think like so I think we’ll get along, LOL.
